Description
The ICT Shared Service Centre at Leiden University is seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer / Kafka Specialist to join the Observability department. In this role, you will be responsible for building a new log broker for the university, which will be a multi-site, redundant Kafka solution that decouples log sources from the systems utilizing those logs. The platform will provide data to both the existing Elastic environment and a newly contracted Elastic environment, with plans to serve additional consumers in the future.
You will assist in setting up and configuring Kafka, connecting log sources, and ensuring optimal data flow management. It is crucial that all implementations are scalable and reliable, minimizing alterations to the original log data. Collaboration with other teams within the ISSC and vendors such as Atos will be essential to ensure seamless integration within the existing environment.
You will be part of the Observability Tooling Team (OTT), which focuses on monitoring and logging across the university. The team collaborates extensively with other infrastructure teams and external partners, operating in a multi-data center and private cloud environment.
Requirements
- Proven experience with Apache Kafka
- Strong knowledge of Linux and containerization technologies (Docker/Podman)
- Familiarity with logging and observability tools (e.g., Elastic, Vector, Zabbix)
- Experience with data streaming technologies (ksqlDB or similar)
- Understanding of networking and high availability concepts
- Knowledge of VRRP
- Experience with Ansible
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with other teams
